The truth about bulk and shred

This blog post is actually created based on a question I got asked recently: “Does it make any sense to shred if I just started working out? I don’t have any muscles yet and my body has a bit more weight than it should…”

Both shred and bulk can be easily misunderstood…

Let’s have a look at bulk first…

Bulk or mass-gaining is usually understood this way: I have to eat in big (both healthy and unhealthy food) without any control in order to gain as much muscles as possible even if it’s at the expense of fat. I also need to buy many supplements such as gainer, creatine and like and workout only few times a week with a minimum intensity to leave enough time and rest for muscles to grow. 

And what about shred?

Shred or loss of weight is usually understood as a process of eating as less as possible, being constantly hungry and avoiding all tasty meals… Buy yourself a fat-burner and train as much as possible. Lead mainly cardio workouts in order to lose and burn that fat.

 Eat and train properly

Bulk and shred were originally created by experts for professional athletes to help them be more effective with a balanced meal plan rich in proteins, complex carbs, unsaturated fats and macronutrients. The body got what it needed to be healthy and operate properly. It also needed to change as needed so it would be most effective and the ways were either to gain more muscles or lose some weight. To reach it they needed to eat either more or less of what THEY NEEDED (increase/decrease daily intake of proteins, carbs, fats and macronutrients.) At the end, terms BULK and SHRED were introduced. And they are far more different than the misunderstood ways that people nowadays think described above!

Your body is the only one you get, respect it

This common understanding of bulk and shred can be very dangerous! It not only destroys your gym effort but it can also cause some serious health problems… In case of bulk, you can gain fat instead of desired muscles and in case of shred you can burn and destroy everything alive in your body and a result you get can lead to eating disorders such as binge eating or anorexia which were already described in previous articles by Simonka. Taking workouts as a hobby and leading a healthy lifestyle is something totally different.

Before you jump into bulk or shred, make sure your body gets what it needs! Looking good is one thing but it doesn’t mean you will also feel that way. Being lean is for nothing if you don’t have enough energy for a sincere smile. The same applies in case of “bulk types”. You may end up standing at a fifth stair trying to catch your breath, realising there might be something wrong… Mass-gain and loss of weight needs to be reasonable. Take enough time for it! Never ever do it at the expanse of your health!
